Annabaa Forum for Dialogue discussed in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, the Freedom of Expression Law.
The session was attended by a number of activists, academicians, non-governmental organizations' representatives and media organs.
The discussion was conducted in its monthly seminar, which was under the motto (Towards an Ideal Law to Guarantee the Freedom of Expression).
The session was held in Uruk hotel in mid of Baghdad, which was attended by Dean of Media College at the University of Baghdad Dr. Hashim Hassan al-Timimi, civil activist and lawyer Firas al-Khaza'li, and it was run by journalist Jaffar Darweesh.
Director of the Forum writer and journalist Ali al-Talakani pointed that "the guarantees of self-expression is attained when the organizations and concerned departments are working together through observing the actions of the legislative authority, particularly when endorsing laws connected with the freedoms, in general, and self-expression, in particular".
"Thus, we find the law of the freedom of expression, passed by the Iraqi parliament, emerged incomplete which will threaten the rights of the citizens and media personnel for getting the information and self-expression", he elaborated.
He added that "we are facing great challenges in amending this law, because we are facing legislative and governmental authorities that did not request the participation of the non-governmental organizations to express their opinions on the law".
"So, we were obliged to hold this dialogue session with a number of specialized activists, academician and representatives of organizations and media personnel who are interested in the subject to discuss this law in detail", Al-Talakani pointed out.
"The session adopted a number of recommendations, that necessitated holding other sessions to crystallize the recommendations in an expanded report to be submitted to the Iraqi Parliament", Talakani concluded.
